Castello District

The Castello district is the heart of Cagliari, and is one of the most important testimonies of the city’s medieval age, from a historical, artistic and architectural point of view. It is the main of the four historic districts of the city of Cagliari. It stands in a prominent position on a limestone hill, about 100 meters from sea level.  It’s popularly known as “Castello” without the article. The Pisans founded this neighborhood in the 13th century, fortified it, providing it with walls, towers and bastions, and transferred the seats of civil, judicial and religious power there from the capital of Santa Igia, which they had previously destroyed, decreeing the end of the Giudicato of Càlari. Since then, under every domination, Pisans 13th-14th Century, Aragonese-Spanish 14th-18th Century, Piedmontese 18th-19th Century, until the second world war, Castello has hosted the palaces of power and the nobles residences.

Villanova District

Villanova is one of the oldest quarters of town. Surely the most quoted, if everyday life comfort is considered. It was the second belt of fortified walls of the city of Cagliari, at guard of vegetable gardens and livestock necessary for the garrison of  the Castle. Its formed by small colored buildings, with scents of a small village. Life here has ancient dynamics, made by families meeting in the piazzas, and old botteghe and shops. From here, you can effortlessly explore the city‘s major sights on foot, including historical landmarks, museums, the harbor, the market, public gardens, being close to the train/bus stations, and multi-story car parks.

S. Pietro island and Carloforte

Known since ancient times by the Phoenicians and Greeks, the Romans called it Accipitrum Insula (island of the hawks), due to the presence of the regina falcon. It was colonized in 1738 by a population whose language and origins were Ligurian, from the small Tunisian island of Tabarca. The name of Saint Peter was chosen by the population, out of devotion to the apostle, who, according to legend, had landed there in 46 A.D.. Carloforte has its own special charm and is considered to be, with good reason, one of the most pristine spots in Sardinia and the Mediterranean.
